“I decided long ago that I would come to Afghanistan on this day in particular, the day we celebrate International Women’s Day.

It is my way of showing the entire world how much I admire the infinite patience, heroic courage and strong resistance of Afghan women.

I came to applaud all the efforts Afghan women are making to take control of their lives and their country’s destiny.

I came to tell them that they are no longer alone and that we find the hand they were dealt—and unfortunately must continue to play—unacceptable.

I came on your behalf to listen to Afghan women as they tell me about their needs and aspirations.

Every step they take to shelter their families from fratricidal conflict is a victory for humanity.

We will continue to openly support them on the road towards full recognition of their rights.

That is what March 8, International Women’s Day, means to us this year, from Kabul.”

Michaëlle Jean
