My husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, and I were deeply saddened to learn that Corporal Nathan Hornbburg of the King’s Own Calgary Regiment in Calgary, Alberta, was killed and that four other soldiers were injured under tragic circumstances West of Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Everyday, the men and women of the Canadian Forces engaged in this difficult and perilous mission demonstrate exemplary commitment to the Afghan population, often risking their own lives. Words cannot describe what we feel as we salute their courage.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Corporal Hornburg as they grieve this loss. On behalf of all Canadians, we offer our sincere condolences.

We also hope that those who were injured make a speedy recovery.

Michaëlle Jean
