We have come together today to welcome a few exceptional Canadians to the Order of Canada.
The Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada’s Honours System and is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary.
It is an honour that highlights and celebrates excellence.
But the Order of Canada is also—and perhaps in particular—a source of inspiration and a call to action.
Because we cannot help but be inspired by those whose actions, dedication, perseverance and commitment have made the world a better place.
Those who overcome all obstacles, those who dream big instead of withdrawing into themselves, those who always try to improve themselves, and those who strive to make the impossible possible.
Because regardless of the area in which you work, you—the people we are honouring today—refuse to rest on your laurels; you continue to develop your skills and expand your horizons.
You never lose sight of the well-being of your fellow Canadians, and help to improve the lives of people here at home and all over the world.
I think the Order of Canada also encourages the rest of us—especially our youth—to pursue our own dreams and to try to change the world for the better.
You remind us that we are all very lucky to live in a country where anything is possible.
And that it is up to each and every one of us to reach our highest goals.
On behalf of the people of Canada, I would like to extend our heartfelt admiration.
And to express the gratitude of the entire country, we welcome you today among the ranks of extraordinary Canadians.
May your example inspire others to surpass themselves, and to continue your good work in their own way.
Thank you, one and all.
