Opera Under the Stars: There may not be any stars tonight, but if we picture them in our minds, they will magically start to shine ... The National Capital Commission has given us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our capital’s 150th anniversary and the beginning of the summer season.
The music only adds to the beauty of this park, which this event is helping to launch. The combination is irresistible, as evidenced by the large number of you who have come out this evening.
Since my arrival in Ottawa, I have tried—in spite of my busy schedule—to find new ways of integrating into the city and taking part in all it has to offer.
And I have discovered a city that is rich in nature and green spaces. I have discovered a community that is proud of its quality of life.
I am absolutely delighted that Ottawa places so much importance on culture, and in both official languages. The bilingual character of this region certainly adds to its wealth and influence.
I enjoy the diversity of the cultures that contribute to the energy of Ottawa. Our capital is home to the world and also welcomes it with open arms. Thousands of visitors come to see us every year.
It is a city that mixes cultures on a daily basis and knows how to benefit from it. In Ottawa, diversity is a way of thinking and a way of living.
Now more than ever, we must focus on openness and dialogue, and music is the perfect way for us to come together and remember what makes us human.
They say that music gives soul to the universe and wings to the mind. So let us sit back and relax, and let the melodic breezes lift our souls to the sky and beyond.
I would like to thank the artists from the Canadian Opera Company and the Opera Lyra Ottawa Chorus, who are joining voices for tonight’s concert. And now, on with the show!
