“Thousands upon thousands of Canadians, women and men, young and old, have the boldness to dream big dreams and the determination to act for the good of all. They support their fellow citizens in a myriad of ways, including their involvement in sports, arts or community initiatives. Volunteers do make a difference! By generously providing their own personal time, ideas and effort, these people are deeply committed to challenging indifference.

To all volunteers, so many of whom work behind the scenes making our society a better, fairer and more humane place to live, I say thank you.

You represent the glimmer of hope that saves so many people from sinking into solitude and helplessness. Each in your own way, you touch lives. Not expecting anything in return, you give a part of yourselves to others and each time are enriched by a new experience. You are models of sharing and openness. You inspire those around you and future generations to follow in your footsteps.

During this National Volunteer Week, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring with such dedication for our collective well-being.”

Michaëlle Jean
