“Today, while our laws guarantee equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities for women and men in every aspect of life, a gap persists. Wherever they are, whatever their nationality, race or culture, women continue to face serious problems, including violence and poverty. Even in a country as progressive as Canada, known for its commitment to human rights and freedom, women must continue to fight to preserve what they have accomplished, to better their circumstances, and to achieve equality. I believe that demanding these rights is the only way to ensure the freedom so abundant in Canada.

The freedom that we enjoy and that gives hope to so many oppressed women all over the world brings with it certain responsibilities. We must all of us defend steadfastly, vigilantly and, yes, even stubbornly the rights of women and children, who are always the most affected by conflict, violence, oppression and injustice.

Let us delay no longer! The time to act is now. Let us ensure that our children—girls and boys—inherit a world where respect is valued above all else. On this International Women’s Day, let us consider what might yet be done so that women, in all their diversity, achieve equality at last. Beyond laws, let us celebrate the right to be women.”
