“To serve one’s country is a noble endeavour. And those who serve in our Canadian Forces demonstrate to all of us a profound belief in the values that we, as a society, hold dear—values of democratic freedom, human rights and a world free from tyranny. These courageous women and men have committed themselves to defending these values with their very lives.
It was a distinct privilege for me, as Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces, to be able to participate in the Remembrance Day ceremony during the Year of the Veteran and to join in the commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Throughout Canada’s history, our valiant soldiers have given their youth, their innocence, and often their lives, so that we could live free from oppression and injustice. We, in turn, rejoice in their victories, mourn their losses and are forever grateful to those who have given us so much.
The dedicated men and women in our Forces today continue to make immense personal sacrifices on our behalf; our debt to them is great. Their families also pay a high price, providing a solid foundation of love and support, often in the face of many uncertainties, long distances and lengthy times apart from their loved ones. This reality was brought home to me most powerfully during a visit to CFB Edmonton last month. After speaking with soldiers who were recently wounded in Afghanistan, and listening to the devoted spouses and family members who steadfastly support their loved ones deployed in the region, I was humbled by the challenges and anxieties they take in their stride every day. And I was deeply moved by the collective strength and resolve that defines the military family, forged from these resilient, resourceful and determined Canadians.
As we celebrate Canadian Forces Day, I encourage all Canadians to join me in thanking all our military personnel for the extraordinary efforts they make to ensure the safety and sovereignty of our country and for their ongoing dedication to bringing peace and stability to countries in crisis.”
