Casablanca, Morocco, Saturday, December 9, 2006

It is wonderful to be here with you.

This is my first visit among our deployed forces. I think it is fitting that this inaugural visit is on one of Canada’s finest destroyers.

The presence of this ship here in Casablanca, your participation in NATO exercises, and your deployment as the Standing NATO Maritime Group One Flagship since August are a powerful symbol of another aspect of Canada’s role in the world.

Our long-standing commitment to peace and security around the globe is at the heart of your efforts.

Whether it was HMCS Rainbow and HMCS Niobe on patrol in the First World War, or another HMCS Iroquois serving valiantly in the Second World War and in Korea, Canadian sailors have a proud tradition of bravery and professionalism. You have worked effectively with our allies to defend and promote the interests of Canada, and of the free world.

As a result, you enable our country to make a vital contribution to the world, helping to contain threats and defuse dangerous situations in hot spots around the globe.

Indeed, you and your colleagues throughout the Canadian Forces have demonstrated time and again what outstanding work you are achieving in the name of justice, peace and stability.

All of you have shown the courage, the strength and the ingenuity that have always been the hallmarks of Canada’s military.

And so, in closing, allow me to thank you for receiving us today. Your warm welcome and your hospitality are truly appreciated.

As you know, Morocco is the last country on a journey of hope in Africa that I began more than three weeks ago. I have been to Algeria, Mali, Ghana, and South Africa, and everywhere I have met exceptional people that are putting a new, positive and yes, hopeful, light on this continent.

Canadian militaries are no exception, and as your commander-in-chief, I am extremely moved to tell you today how proud we all are of you.

I want to extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you. Know that wherever duty may take you, you go with the grateful appreciation of your fellow Canadians.

To the officers and crew of HMCS Iroquois, I say: May you always be “relentless in chase”, and successful in all your endeavours!

Thank you very much.
