A survivor of cancer, Elaine McKibbon has quietly volunteered to assist cancer patients. In 1985 she founded CanCope, now called Cansurmount, to provide emotional support to cancer patients on the Miramichi. She has tirelessly promoted the program, ensured that Cancer Society material was readily available , and matched visitors with patients who needed help. Mrs. McKibbon is also active in two church choirs, supports other local volunteer organizations, visits people who are house-bound, and has long been known as the provider of caring support to members of the community in times of serious illness and tragedy.
