Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
As a forty-year volunteer with the Cancer Society, beginning as a door-to-door canvasser, Shirley Wallbridge brought the No Smoking program into schools, organized the Daffodil campaign and served as a patient advocate. A volunteer with the Nelson & District Home Support Services for the past seven years, she delivered Meals on Wheels, was a seniors peer counsellor, and helped secure funding for an Adult Day Centre and for Nelson's information and referral service, the Senior's One Stop. Mrs. Wallbridge also accompanied a woman with Alzheimer Disease on weekly outings, drove people to appointments and on errands, and helped a woman with limited literacy skills to understand diet and medication instructions to help control her diabetes.
