Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
David Stewart is a former Edmonton police officer and volunteer board member of the George Spady Centre, an inner city agency serving people who have substance use problems. An effective spokesperson, very supportive of the Centre's staff and clients, he has demonstrated compassion and respect for the dignity and welfare of these clients, encouraging others to treat them with dignity. Over the years, he has also assisted Aboriginal People and is currently Chief of Police for the Blood Tribe Indian Reserve in Standoff. In addition, as foster parents and adoptive parents, Mr. Stewart and his wife have cared for several children with various special needs, including mental and physical disabilities, fetal alcohol syndrome, severe behavioural disorders, or who have been abused or orphaned.
