Jan Stick, Whitehorse, Yukon
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Over the years and through Whitehorse's long, cold winters and, often, short hours of daylight, Jan Stick has helped many people, from families in need to disabled persons with substance-abuse problems. For 12 years, she has coordinated her church's monthly involvement in a soup kitchen by organizing donations, preparing food and enlisting volunteers. She also visits people in hospital, drops off food, provides transportation, shovels snow, walks the dog, or just calls to cheer someone up. With her gentle sense of humour, she confronts anger, sorrow or disappointment in the kindest way and, in the end, always gets the job done.
