Réal Mercier, Quebec City, Quebec
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Réal Mercier has worked with the St. Vincent de Paul Society in the Holy Saviour and St. Malo parishes for over 40 years. Over the years, he has gone door-to-door to collect food for benefit dinners and raise funds for Christmas hampers. In the past 15 years, almost every day of the week, he has worked as a meals-on-wheels volunteer driver. For a dozen years now, he has been active with his neighbours living in Kirouac Retirement Homes, organizing leisure activities, visiting and serving on the home's board. A man with great sensitivity toward seniors, patients or disadvantaged persons, Mr. Mercier is always an unflagging and devoted torchbearer for charity towards his fellow human beings.
