Pierre Maranda is a prominent figure in modern anthropology in Canada. Professor emeritus at Université Laval and still practising, he expanded the field of social anthropology through an innovative approach drawing on philosophy, literature, mathematics and computer sciences. He is one of the leading experts on Melanesian ethnology and the first to have approached and lived among the Lau people, one of the Solomon Islands peoples least known in the world.
