A leader in academic administration, she has promoted equal opportunities for women. Former President of York University and Vice-Rector of the University of Ottawa, where she founded the women's studies program, she serves as a powerful role model for women in public administration. She was a key contributor to the growth of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, both as a founding member and board member. As a historian and professor, she has been known as a meticulous researcher and sensitive chronicler of Canada's past.
