Well-known in the North for his legendary and revolutionary work as a transportation pioneer, for more than forty years, he has been responsible for building the ice road each winter that carries cargo and supplies between the Northwest Territories and Alberta. The 520-kilometre ice road, which is used to transport a variety of materials that supply the region with invaluable items, is essential to the local economy. Considered a hero for keeping the vital route open, he overcame many obstacles and risks, often braving temperatures of minus sixty degrees and intense winter storms.
