In recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements, he has received numerous awards, including the 1993 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. His development of a crucial technique used in genetic engineering, known as site-directed mutagenesis, is an important contribution to our understanding of genes, the proteins they produce and DNA. A brilliant teacher and researcher at the University of British Columbia, he is a mentor to young scientists and a generous benefactor of schizophrenia research.
