He is a deeply caring and selfless individual whose reputation as a teacher and practitioner is legendary. For many years he provided expert professional eye care, often at his own expense, to Native people in distant Arctic communities and remote parts of Newfoundland, Labrador and Northern Ontario, believing that quality health care should be available to all Canadians no matter their circumstances or where they live. He has also generously supported community medical facilities and a fund in ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario.
