As a professional soldier, he has served Canada with distinction for more than thirty-five years. In the role of Chief of the Defence Staff, he led the Canadian Forces through extremely challenging times, marked by a war in the Persian Gulf, a major domestic crisis and an unprecedented growth in the number of peacekeeping operations, in parallel with a significant downsizing of the Forces. He also devoted a great deal of time and energy to Scouts Canada's National Council and to the organization's Substance Abuse Task Force. He is now the Canadian Ambassador to the United States.

- Invested on: November 21, 2014
For his distinguished public service, notably as a leader in the Northern Ireland peace process.
John de Chastelain has dedicated his life to the promotion of peace and security around the world. Upon the completion of his second term at the helm of the Canadian Armed Forces, he was sought to assist with the multi-party peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. For over a decade, he played a key role in the negotiations that led to the signing of the Northern Ireland peace agreement and was subsequently selected to chair the independent body tasked with decommissioning paramilitary arms held by various factions of the conflict, which ultimately helped to bring stability to the region.
This is a promotion within the Order.
