Former rector and professor emeritus at the University of Ottawa, he has made a name for himself in research as a biochemist and physiologist, in particular as co-discoverer of an enzyme linked to metabolism. A talented teacher and administrator, he has helped bring Carleton University and the University of Ottawa closer together through course exchanges, joint programs and meetings of administrators. He led the Canadian Mediterranean Institute, where his advice furthered the research conducted overseas by Canadians.
