Forced to leave his gallery in Dusseldorf, Max Stern arrived in Canada in 1940 and within two years had joined the Dominion Gallery in Montreal becoming sole owner in 1946. Our first scholar-dealer, he championed such artists as Emily Carr and the Montreal painters of the forties. His own Canadian and European collection has toured the country extensively, and he has made important gifts to public collections.
