He has made a valuable contribution to preserving and enriching the social and cultural life of Newfoundland through his work as scholar, teacher, researcher and author. The Dictionary of Newfoundland English has achieved enormous popularity and his unique ability to instruct and entertain at the same time has made him an affable member of the faculty of Memorial University.
