Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, who during a career of over half a century was a beloved teacher, an eminent German scholar and friend of the whole arts and letters community of Toronto. Not content with achieving international recognition for his books on Goethe and Heine and his translation of Faust, he turned in middle life to painting.
