An internationally celebrated filmmaker, David Cronenberg apprenticed in the burgeoning Canadian underground cinema of the 1970s. Since then, he has pushed cinematic conventions and has left indelible images. His first independent feature films, Shivers and Rabid, earned him widespread attention as one of the most original filmmakers of the horror genre. Crash, perhaps his most controversial film, elicited a strong reaction from all audiences, prompting the Cannes Film Festival jury to create a special prize for audacity. In 1999 he became the first Canadian chosen to preside over the jury. He is hailed as a daring and inimitable director and his stature within the international cinematic community is undisputed.

For his unflagging contributions to Canadian film as a cinematic icon who has cemented his place within the worldÆs top echelon of filmmakers. This is a promotion within the Order.
David Cronenberg has cemented his place in the worldÆs top echelon of filmmakers. Our foremost cinematic ambassador, he is one of the few Canadians who commands the respect of the worldwide film industry by dint of a predominantly homegrown reputation. In 2006, he added the Cannes Film FestivalÆs Carrosse dÆOr to his growing collection of international accolades, which includes jury prizes from two of the worldÆs most prestigious film festivals. Nonetheless, he remains unflagging in his support of Canadian cinema and continues to staff his international projects with Canadian cast and crew members.
