Michael Hayden is a leading human genetic researcher and specialist in genetic medicine, focusing on Huntington's disease. Director and senior scientist at the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, and a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia, he has analyzed the molecular structure of the defective gene that leads to Huntington's. His lab has developed a program that uses DNA analysis to test whether one is carrying this gene. As well, he has made important discoveries on lipid disorders, coronary artery disease and adverse reactions to drugs. A humanitarian and entrepreneur, he is committed to translating discoveries into treatments for patients, and is the founder of three Canadian biotechnology companies.
