A leading medical researcher, Michael Baker has worked to further our understanding of cancer and to improve health care delivery in Canada. He was instrumental in the creation of the University Health Network, in Toronto, and helped it gain international recognition during his 16 years as its physician-in-chief. His clinical research has improved our understanding of leukemia and other cancers, and has led to modern treatments for these diseases. In addition, he helped create the Leukemia Research Fund, served as president of the Canadian Cancer Institute, and has volunteered in leadership roles with several other national health care organizations.
