One of our foremost interpreters of the Arctic, he began as a newspaper photographer after arriving from Latvia thirty-three years ago. Later he traveled and wrote while whaling in the Azores, working in a kibbutz in Israel and herding reindeer in Finland. Finding his metier in the Canadian North, he traversed it for twenty years, photographing and writing about the people. His eight books have been translated into several languages.
