First elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1959, his impact on the Province was profoundly felt long before he took the helm in 1971. Premier for thirteen years, his influence extended well beyond the borders of the Province, as witnessed by the leading role he played in the negotiations leading to the repatriation of the Constitution. Retired from office in 1984, he is currently Canada's Special Envoy on Acid Rain.
