Following a distinguished military career, he entered business in Vancouver and became president of MacMillan-Bloedel and of the Council of Forest Industries of British Columbia. His work for charitable organizations has been exemplary, including his position as chairman of the National Second Century Fund of British Columbia, which acquires ecological sensitive areas for the benefit of future generations.
