On the completion of a military career Brigadier-General McGinnis became a specialist in historical restoration technology. His thirty years as Managing Director of the Toronto Historical Board saw the accurate restoration of major historic houses, the designation of important buildings and the design of relevant legislation. Having played a leading role in preserving Toronto's heritage, he has himself been designated as a historical personage of his city.
