He is a Montreal lawyer who has concentrated on the relations between law and medicine, and who teaches medical jurisprudence at McGill. But in the past ten years he has come strongly to the fore as champion of the English-speaking minority in Quebec, and of cooperation - rather than separation -between language groups. So great is his zeal for Canadian unity that he has been nicknamed the "Confederation Man".
