Born in Calgary and educated at the Universities of Alberta and Toronto, he was called to the Saskatchewan Bar after war service with the Air Force. At thirty he was the author of the Saskatchewan Bill of Rights, the first such enacted in Canada, and at thirty-one the youngest King's counsel in the Commonwealth. He has staunchly defended the rights of individuals and organizations in the court room and championed the cause of human rights and civil liberties.
