Chancellor's Professor at Carleton University, Patricia Smart has brought new insight and understanding to the study of Quebec's culture. She wrote a pioneering work that is the touchstone for those investigating the province's literature from a feminist perspective. As well, she has shed important light on the women artists of the revolutionary Automatiste movement of the 1940s and '50s. She has initiated important collaborations between Francophone and Anglophone writers and remains a steadfast promoter of the importance of women in Canada's artistic heritage.
