The initiator of the oilseed breeding programme at the University of Manitoba, he has since developed varieties of rapeseed so much improved that they have been renamed canola to distinguish them. His discoveries have laid the groundwork for what has become Canada's thirdmost economically important crop and has turned oilseed processing into a major secondary industry in western Canada.
