Founder and director of the School of Criminology at the University of Montreal and also of the International Centre for Comparative Criminology, he is recognized as one of the leading figures of contemporary criminology. He instituted the study of this discipline in Québec and helped establish in Canada, and promulgate abroad, a solid tradition of teaching and research. A member of the Royal Society of Canada, he has been honoured by several American and European associations.
