Marie Deschamps has played an important role in the development of law in Canada. Rising quickly through the ranks of the judiciary, she has sat on the Superior Court and the Court of Appeal of Quebec, distinguishing herself through her extensive knowledge, her compassion and her meticulous case research. She also gained distinction at the Supreme Court of Canada, where she rendered judgments that marked the evolution of bankruptcy and insolvency law, and corporate law. In addition, she spent much of her career training young lawyers, notably at the UniversitÚ de Sherbrooke and the UniversitÚ de MontrÚal, and has encouraged women to carve out a greater place for themselves within the profession.
