On November 18, 2021, Sergeant Steel was one of the first members on scene minutes after a violent building explosion at Canadian Forces Base Comox, British Columbia. Despite his proximity to the explosion and the risk of a secondary blast, he assisted multiple casualties and competently directed evacuation efforts on the ground, preserving life and securing the area. Sergeant Steel’s determination and critical work with the on-site incident commander projected professionalism and leadership in an extremely stressful and chaotic situation.
