Medal of Bravery
On March 20, 1999, Lindsay Police Csts. Chad Culbert and Scott Duffy and Sgt. Paul Richards attempted to save three elderly individuals from a burning house in Lindsay, Ontario. With flames shooting three metres above the house, Sgt. Richards kicked in the front door and began dousing the fire. Meanwhile, Csts. Culbert and Duffy raced in through the back door and, guided by flashlights, located an elderly couple lying unconscious on the floor. While Cst. Duffy dragged the severely-burned man outside, Cst. Culbert went farther in and was knocked down by a flame-flash as he reached the woman. Cst. Duffy rushed to help his colleague and together they were able to remove the woman from the house. Cst. Duffy was then joined by Sgt. Richards and together they searched for the other man until they were forced out by the inferno. Unfortunately, the third victim could not be saved and the woman died of her injuries a few weeks later.
