Early on the morning of March 30, 1998, Barry Craggy pulled an elderly neighbour from her burning home in Burlington, Ontario. Alerted to the fire by his wife, Mr. Craggy broke the woman's front door with an axe and was met by a wall of thick black smoke. Ignoring the roaring sound of the fire and the extreme heat, Mr. Craggy crawled inside on his hands and knees. Although impaired by near- zero visibility and choking smoke, he was able to locate the woman who had collapsed to the floor, some seven metres from the front door. Mr. Craggy grabbed hold of the unconscious victim and dragged her to the door where his wife helped carry her outside. Despite Mr. Craggy's most valiant efforts, the victim could not be saved.
