On June 11, 1998, off-duty Correctional Officer Daniel Stricko disarmed a knife-wielding shoplifter in Peterborough, Ontario. Mr. Stricko was shopping when the thief was arrested by the local store authorities. Recognizing the man as a violent offender, Mr. Stricko warned the store manager of his mental instability and aggressive behaviour. Soon after, the intoxicated man pulled out a knife and slashed his own forearm while uttering threats to the staff. Mr. Stricko attempted to subdue him by talking to him but the man repeatedly lunged at him. Undaunted by the knife, Mr. Stricko tackled and disarmed the attacker and restrained him until help arrived.
