Medal of Bravery
On November 12, 1990, Mr. Lyons and his grandfather Mr. McGee rescued five hunters whose boat had capsized in Wauklehegan Lake near McAdam, New Brunswick. While hunting, the two heard cries for help and spotted the overturned boat with five men clinging to it. Hurrying to the dock, they started their boat and headed through high waves to the scene where they attempted, unsuccessfully, to tow the boat to shore. One victim managed to hang on to the rescuers' boat which made it to the beach but became stuck on the icy rocks. Strong winds pushed the capsized boat toward shore and Mr. Lyons and Mr. McGee waded into the water to help three of the victims onto land and up to a nearby camp. They then pulled the fifth man out of the icy water and, with numb hands, slowly dragged him to the camp where Mr. Lyons performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but to no avail. The rescuers, although freezing and exhausted, walked through dense woods for an hour to alert the authorities.
