Edward Joseph Duff, S.C.,
Star of Courage
Fifteen-year-old Edward Joseph Duff of St. John's, Newfoundland, dove forty feet into the sea near Torbay in a valiant attempt to save the life of a young girl on September 8, 1972. The girl was attempting to ease her way down the side of the cliff to reach the entrance to a cave, when she lost her footing and fell into the sea. Removing his jacket, the boy at once leaped to her aid. Edward Duff managed three times to bring the girl within reach of the rocks; but the action of the waves continually dragged them back. Exhausted from his efforts in the turbulent sea, he could no longer support the victim. With the help of others he succeeded in getting ashore.
