On the afternoon of April 2, 1984, Mr. André Perrault provided heroic assistance to a fellow citizen in danger in the Caribbean Sea of Barbados. The two men were swimming side by side when a huge wave swept one of them out to the open sea. Unable to get back, the man panicked. Braving the danger, Mr. Perrault swam toward him and tried in vain to bring him back to shore. He did however manage to bring the man to the surface, so he could catch his breath. When the man had calmed down, Mr. Perrault laid him on his back and grasped a rope floating nearby. Mr. Perrault swam alongside the rope, pulling the victim after him. However, a wave swept them both under a wharf. Mr. Perrault's persistent efforts enabled him to resurface and haul the exhausted victim to the wharf, where others were waiting to help them.
