The fire was well advanced when Toronto Police Csts. Wayne Boyd and Christopher Buck arrived at the apartment building on September 14, 1984. Informed that a couple was trapped inside a basement apartment where the fire had originated, they immediately attempted to rescue the victims through the hallway but were forced to retreat by the intense heat and smoke. They then broke the living room windows to allow smoke to escape and activated the fire hoses. At that point, Csts. Michael Trimble and Kenneth Thompson arrived at the scene and took over the fire hoses. Csts. Boyd and Buck made another attempt to rescue the victims through the hallway. They crawled on their hands and knees for about four metres in a very small corridor of air above the floor before they found the man and dragged him out of the building. Meanwhile, Csts. Trimble and Thompson had succeeded in extinguishing the fire and had caught sight of the other victim lying on the living room floor. In spite of the dense smoke, they entered the apartment through a broken window. They located the woman, carried her to the window and lifted her into the waiting arms of their colleagues.
