Rémi Desrochers was driving toward Rouyn on 26 May 1984, when he came upon a two-vehicle accident. Stopping to help, he found that both drivers had escaped the burning wreckage, but that one was trying to extricate his wife, unconscious and strapped in her seat. Moving the dazed man away, Mr. Desrochers entered the flaming vehicle to rescue her. Ignoring his own burns and the frightening heat - the tires were exploding while he was inside - he persisted until he freed her from the belt and pulled her out. Shortly after, the vehicle exploded. Although himself in pain, he assisted the other victim until the ambulance arrived.
