At great risk to his life, Randy Davey entered a two-storey apartment building to rouse the tenants during a fire on 24 March 1977. He had been driving by when he saw flames and entered the dwelling by stairs that were already ablaze. Inside, he woke the tenants by shouting and then burst into an apartment occupied by a man and a woman warn them that the corridor was an inferno. The couple retreated with the rescuer into a bedroom and escaped through a window. Others roused by the noise and who escaped were a man and two women. One of the women, eight months pregnant, was urged to jump from the second storey by Randy, who broke her fall. She and her rescuer were then taken to hospital where he was treated for serious burns.
