On February 11, 1978, Gordon Stevenson was wounded while attempting to catch a thief in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The thief had entered a self-service filling station, threatened the attendant, and taken the money in the till. Moments after the robber had fled, Gordon Stevenson arrived on the scene and was given a description of the thief by the attendant. Gordon had noticed him seconds earlier and gave chase. They confronted each other in a lane, and the thief shot Gordon in the chest. Though seriously wounded he managed to make his way to a house where the occupants telephoned for police and ambulance. Gordon was taken to hospital where some time later he recovered from the wound.
