Denny Andrews, then aged seventeen, saved two cousins from drowning near their home at Point Leamington, Newfoundland, on 28 December 1977. The boys had been skating and had fallen through the thin ice some seventy-five yards from shore. Their cries attracted several residents including Denny. Firemen then arrived and held out a rope and ladder, but the ice was too thin to support any weight. When Denny saw that the victims' strength was failing he entered the water and pushed them towards the ladder. All three were subsequently brought to shore.
