On September 28, 1996, Marc Tercier pulled a semi-conscious driver from a burning camper-van that had flipped on its side near his house in Ladysmith, British Columbia. Hearing the sound of crunching metal, Mr. Tercier called 911 then rushed outside to witness a trail of fire as the vehicle scraped against the concrete barrier. When the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road, Mr. Tercier tried to climb onto the wreck to open the driver's door but the extreme heat drove him away. As he attempted to find another way in, the van's retractable tent canopy popped open, exposing its canvas sides. Although he burned his hands ripping through the canvas, Mr. Tercier reached inside and removed the victim to safety.
