At approximately 2 p.m., on December 14, 1985, WO. Edward Stewart was carrying out duties at the Canadian Contingent Leave Centre in Limassol, Cyprus when he heard cries for help coming from the water's edge. Immediately, he rushed to the scene and saw stranded in the water a member of the "Canadian Across the Sea" variety show who had paddled in a kayak beyond the protective breakwater and capsized. Without regard for his own safety, WO. Stewart dove into the water and swam steadily towards the man, battling the rough waters and a strong undertow in an effort to come to his rescue. At this point, the man was quickly exhausting himself in a desperate attempt to stay above water. When he reached the man, WO. Stewart managed to calm him down and keep him afloat. He then steered him clear of the rocks and hauled him to safety. WO. Stewart's prompt action and physical courage saved the man's life.
